Lithium value chain: analysis of the global value chain of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles

This document presents the second part of a study that includes two reports. The objective of the study is to contribute to the analysis and discussion of two key interrelated topics that will have repercussions on mining in the Andean countries in the very near future: first, the changes in the patterns of demand and use of copper and lithium worldwide and in the countries of the Andean region, as well as the consequences of the global deployment of technologies for the energy transition and, second, the global lithium value chains for the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, including an effort to evaluate the potential of scaling in the Andean countries.

This report performs a detailed analysis of the value chain of lithium-ion batteries, from a market perspective, identifying the main actors, areas of development, projections and decision factors in the production stages. It compares the reality of Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of) and Chile, and reviews gaps and opportunities for the development of this industry, collecting best governance practices and recommendations for public policy guidelines.
