ENERGY 2.0 A Renewable Energy Future for T&T

The global energy landscape is in flux, with the world
transitioning to a decarbonised future. Enthusiasm
for such a future was highlighted in 2015 at the
United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21)
held in Paris. The consensus was that more aggressive
measures must be put in place to reduce the impact
of rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are
influencing climate and air quality. Fossil fuels which
dominate the world’s primary energy supply (Figure 1)
contribute significantly to GHG emissions. In order to
curb these emissions, there must be some measure of
displacement by cleaner energy sources.
According to data collated by the Energy Institute
in 2017, renewable energy (RE) currently contributes
approximately four per cent of total primary energy, but
statistical reports predicts the range to climb between
nine to 33 per cent between 2035 and 2050, with greater
power sector penetration in particular1 as energy policies
and economics dictate the pace of change.
