This document presents the first part of a study that consists of two reports. The objective of the study is to contribute to the analysis and discussion of two key interrelated topics that will have repercussions on mining in the Andean countries in the very near future: first, the changes in the patterns of demand and use of copper and lithium worldwide and in the countries of the Andean region, as well as the consequences of the global deployment of technologies for the energy transition and, second, the global lithium value chains for the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, including an effort to evaluate the potential of scaling in the Andean countries.
This first report presents an analysis of the copper and lithium markets, focused mainly on the region made up of Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Chile and Peru. In addition to addressing the prospects related to their supply and their current and future demand, the main factors of change in the medium and long term are identified. It also analyzes how sustainable mining management will influence these markets, along with other current trends.
